Predator’s Low Deflection Pool Cues are More Accurate and Help Your Game Progress Faster.
It comes down to the superior control you get with a Predator Low Deflection Cue, regardless of if it’s a wood or carbon fiber cue.
It’s that control that allows you to not only make the shot flawlessly, but set up the next one, and the next, and clear the table like a pro!
Using a low-deflection cue makes the use of English, or side spin, more accurate, and that is the true key to setting up shot after shot. While it may take some practice with an LD cue, you’ll see and feel the difference that it can make in your game, especially if you’re invested in improving your game.
What Does Low Deflection Mean?
A low deflection pool cue has a different type of construction that is designed to reduce deflection, or ‘squirt’ when the cue hits the cue ball.
Every time your pool cue hits the cue ball, the angle changes ever so slightly, especially if you hit the ball hard and fast. It also changes based on the type of cue used and the placement of the tip on the cue ball. Players compensate for this naturally overtime, almost unconsciously.
But with a low deflection cue, that annoying, subtle squirt is greatly reduced to the point where it’s nearly non-existent, especially with a carbon fiber Predator cue.
The Construction of a Low Deflection Pool Cue
The difference between a traditional cue and an LD pool cue lies in the way it is constructed. There are several elements that make a cue low deflection.
The first is the shaft. The more flexible the top of the shaft is, the less deflection it will create. Traditional pool cue shafts are made from one solid piece of wood, which is not flexible and causes more squirt during a shot.
To get maximum flexibility, while still being sturdy and durable, Predator and other cue manufacturers take a couple of approaches.
The first being a hollow tip, about 6 inches long, with a cushion in the ferrule that absorbs impact and provides that low deflection effect. Some LD cues fill that hollow space with lighter wood, foam or carbon fiber to help it to keep its strength.
In addition to the hollowed-out shaft tip, some LD cues also have a slightly narrower tip, reducing the mass. This makes the tip move out of the cue ball’s way within milliseconds after impact, decreasing deflection even further.
Ultimately, the energy created by the impact of the cue ball needs to go somewhere (per physics) and on a low-deflection shaft, the tip of the cue absorbs it. On traditional shafts, the cue ball does, which causes it to squirt around the table unexpectedly.
Why Should You Switch to a Low Deflection Cue?
Making the switch to an LD cue is really about personal preference, but it certainly comes with a handful of benefits you should consider.
Your shots will be more accurate and consistent for all the reasons discussed above. You won’t need to compensate for deflection and can control not only your first shot, but use more accurate English to put the cue ball right where you need it for the next one. And since there’s less room for error in every shot, your entire game will improve.
Although low-deflection cues are typically more expensive than classic wood cues, they generally last much longer because they are reinforced in ways to make low deflection happen in the first place.
Why Predator is at the Top of the LD Cue Game
Not only did Predator start the low deflection revolution in billiards, but they have continued to invest in research, development and technology to keep the evolution on a fast path to even more innovation.
The Predator Revo and Z-Shafts 3rd Generation lines are used by champion billiards players all over the world, working together to keep the technology moving forward.
