The History of Shuffleboard
Shuffleboard first showed up during the 1500s across the pond in Great Britain, but was then known simply as “shove a penny,” as that action was the basic gist of the sport.
The point was for players to shoot coins down one of the bar to the other, trying to get as close to the edge as possible without having their penny fall off.
Even Noblemen and Ladies commissioned tables for their homes and used coins specifically crafted for the game as pucks. Eventually it was outlawed by King Henry VIII, who thought it distracted soldiers from practicing their archery and sword-fighting instead.
The game was eventually brought to the United States by English settlers, where it gained popularity in bars up and down the East Coast. It found its way to California in 1900, and by 1950 it was one of the most popular games in the country.
While increasing entertainment options caused shuffleboard to wane in popularity in the 1960s and ‘70s, it has since had a resurgence of sorts, and thousands still flock to competitions each year.
Why People Love Playing Shuffleboard
While it’s true that a majority of players are retirees who go to the shuffleboard courts every day, people of all ages are playing table shuffleboard now more than ever. Whether it is your game room, basement, man cave, or other spot in your home, it’s easy to add a shuffleboard table to your house and your entertainment plans.
It’s a great social outlet for all ages — with many of those people playing in Florida for over 100 years. The first courts were located in Daytona Beach, and the official rules were formed at the St. Pete club in the mid-1920s. But today, the youngest pro in the state of Florida is actually 32 years old!
